Dangote-Ethiopia Sign Agreement
Following our earlier news on Dangote plan to build a urea complex - See 27 June Alert, Nigeria’s Dangote Group has signed a landmark agreement with Ethiopian Investment Holdings to develop a $2.5 billion fertilizer production complex in Gode, eastern Ethiopia. The facility, expected to deliver 3 million tonnes per year of urea, will be one of Africa’s largest and aims to significantly reduce the continent’s reliance on imports.
Dangote will hold a 60% stake in the venture, with EIH retaining 40%. The project marks a major step in Ethiopia’s industrialization drive and aligns with Dangote’s broader ambition to position Africa as a net fertilizer exporter.
Market participants note that the planned volumes, if delivered, could alter regional urea flows, reshaping import demand patterns across Ethiopia and East Africa and potentially reaching other global markets such as India.
Ethiopia’s urea market is estimated to reach 1 million tonnes in 2026, making it one of the biggest in Africa
