Ethiopia’s EABC Receives Urea and DAP Offers

9 January 2025

Ethiopia, home to Africa’s largest fertilizer import market and the world’s biggest single buyer, continues to make significant strides in the global commodity landscape. On January 8, 2025, Ethiopia’s EABC received revised bids for its urea and DAP tender, marking a critical milestone in its procurement strategy.

Tender Overview

EABC initially received several bids for DAP and urea on December 23, 2024. Following this, the organization requested participating firms to revise their offers to align with prevailing global market prices. The revised bids, submitted on January 8, amounted to a total of 510,000 tonnes.

DAP Offers: Origins include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.

Urea Offers: Origins include the UAE and Oman.

Key Achievements

EABC’s remarkable success in this tender highlights two significant accomplishments:

Securing DAP Tonnage: Amid a challenging global environment marked by China’s export restrictions and no participation from Morocco, EABC successfully ensured supply.

Achieving Target Prices: In a volatile market environment, EABC met its price objectives, underscoring its adept negotiation skills and strategic foresight.

These achievements reflect the ability of an African procurement entity to navigate complex global commodity markets and contribute to Ethiopia’s journey toward enhanced food sovereignty.
