AMUFERT advances Soyo construction
Development of AMUFERT’s ammonia-urea complex at Soyo has moved further into physical construction, with foundations and supporting infrastructure completed, it is heard, with first industrial equipment received at the site. Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas said engineering and procurement were advanced, while preparations were under way for assembly of the main plant systems. Fabrication of critical ammonia and urea equipment was also reported to be at an advanced stage.
The gas-based complex is designed to produce 2,300 t/d of ammonia and 4,000 t/d of urea, equivalent to around 1.3mn t/yr of urea on published project assumptions - see more details in AFRIQOM Fertiliser Capacity Pipeline Tracker. Total investment is now stated at approximately $2.6bn, compared with the $2bn figure previously associated with the development. Around $477mn had been disbursed by 31 July, according to the ministry.
Documentation for financial close on an Afreximbank-backed financing package of $1.45bn remains under formalisation.
AMUFERT is expected to feature at Angola Oil & Gas 2026 in Luanda on 9–10 September, where the market will be looking for clarification on the financial-close timetable, the revised project cost and the expected start-up date.
