The World Bank calls for a "drastic reorientation" of the global agri-food system

9 May 2024

The World Bank's recent report highlights the urgent need to overhaul the global agri-food system for the sake of planetary health. While acknowledging the sector's significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, the proposed solutions still face skepticism from experts in agricultural transition.

Historically, agricultural emissions have been overshadowed by other sectors such as energy, industry, and transportation in climate agendas, with the complexity and extent of agricultural emissions cited as reasons for the delayed focus on this sector. Nevertheless, The World Bank's commitment to allocate 45% of its financing to climate-related issues signals a growing determination to address environmental challenges comprehensively.
