Senegal is on track to launch a urea plant by 2029, aiming to supply fertiliser to the sub-region and several Western countries

Currently importing up to 100,000 tonnes of urea yearly, the project, led by Petrosen Trading & Services, seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in urea production and utilize phosphate for mixed NPK fertilisers.

By harnessing gas reservoirs discovered off the coast, Senegal aims to become self-sufficient in urea production, effectively reversing the current import dynamics. The SEFCO plant, slated for completion by 2029, will not only bolster Senegal's economy but also elevate its status as a key player in the global fertiliser market.

According to recent studies, the plant's operation could capture nearly 17 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over three decades, underscoring its sustainable approach. This captured CO2 presents a wealth of opportunities, from enhancing food preservation techniques to bolstering the agro-food industry and even contributing to construction efforts. With the support of world-class technologies and the expertise of Manufacturing Africa, Senegal is laying the groundwork for a brighter, greener future.
