Kenyan Agriculture Minister confronted with challenges regarding the Fake Fertilizer Scandal

7 May 2024

Kenya's Agriculture Secretary, Mithika Linturi, faces potential ousting following allegations of approving the distribution of fake fertilizer in a government subsidy program, as reported by local outlets.

Lawmakers in the National Assembly have initiated an investigation, with eighty percent supporting a motion for Linturi's removal over concerns of violating constitutional provisions on integrity and public resource management. In a related development, following our prior market alerts and in collaboration with ACORRA, a credit rating company focusing on the African fertilizer supply chain, KEBS confiscated 5,840 bags of substandard fertilizer from the NCPB storage nationwide, supplied by SBL-innovate without certification. Additionally, MoALD issued a suspension notice to the NCPB regarding NPK 10-26-10 by Ken Chemicals Ltd, pending quality verification.
